The IceCap Turf Scrubber is a specialized biological filtration system designed for freshwater and saltwater aquariums. It “cleans” water by cultivat Synoshi Pro | Synoshi Pro ing beneficial algae on a dedicated internal screen, which naturally exports nitrates and phosphates from the system.
- What it does best: Effectively reduces nuisance algae in the main display tank and stabilizes pH when run on a reverse daylight cycle.
- Where it may fall short: Requires a consistent “break-in” period for algae to seed; performance is limited by the flow rate and light intensity of the specific model.
2. What Is IceCap Turf Scrubber Review?
In the context of aquarium maintenance, an IceCap Turf Scrubber (ATS) is an automated filtration device rather than a handheld cleaning brush. Unlike manual electric spin scrubbers used for household tiles, this “scrubber” refers to a waterfall-style filter. It is typically used in:
- Reef and Marine Tanks: To control high nutrient levels that cause “ugly” algae growth.
- Sumps and Filtration Systems: For hidden, high-efficiency water purification.
- Freshwater Setups: To reduce the frequency of manual water changes.
3. How It Works
The device functions as a controlled “algae farm” to keep the rest of your tank clean.
- Internal LED Lighting: Powerful full-spectrum LEDs illuminate both sides of an internal screen to maximize growth.
- Textured Growth Screen: A rough-textured plastic mesh designed for “turf” algae to grip and grow.
- Waterfall Flow: A dedicated pump (often included in the Pro models) trick Oct 13, 2026 · BEST Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster Oct 6, 2026 · In the best of all possible worlds, no one would be without food and clean water. - Strong on Nutrient Maintenance: Our tests indicate it is highly effective at maintaining low nitrate levels (1–5 ppm) in established tanks.
- Struggles with Heavy Initial Buildup: It is not a “miracle fix” for a tank already overgrown with hair algae; manual removal of existing algae is still required to give the scrubber a head start.
- Depends on Light Cycle: Performance peaks when the LEDs are run for 12–18 hours per day.
